Welcome to the March 5, 2009 edition of Objectivist round up. This week presents insight and analyses written by authors who are animated by Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand. According to Ayn Rand:
My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.
"About the Author," Atlas Shrugged, Appendix.
Now that the formalities are over, it honours me to present (for the first time) the lastest Objectivist Round Up!
- Gena Gorlin presents Obama the Intellectual? posted at The Undercurrent: Many hail Obama as a true intellectual, yet his shooting-from-the-hip decision making style seems no different from that of self-professed non-intellectual politicians. Is Obama really a model of how to apply the intellect to solving political problems?
- Jared Seehafer presents The Republican Party's Identity Crisis posted at The Undercurrent: The first years of President Obama's administration provide the Republican Party with an opportunity to redefine itself. But to do so, Republicans first need to decide what they stand for.
- The Undercurrent Editors present Ayn Rand's Non-Religious Conception of Morality posted at The Undercurrent: Many young people seek answers to important questions about the world and their own lives, and religion offers answers - in fact it sells itself as the only way to get such answers. But there is a way to be both moral and of this world...
- Rituparna Basu presents Who Should Pay for Autism Treatment? posted at The Undercurrent:Several states have passed laws mandating that insurance companies cover the costs of autism treatment, and other states are considering similar laws. The proponents of such bills cite the emotional and financial hardship involved in caring for a child with autism. Is the hardship felt by these families a justification to demand that others to pay their medical bills?
- Khartoum presents Some Of My Insights -- Objectivity posted at Reddie Reasons.: Some of my thoughts on the concept of Objectivity after some learning from the Objectivism Seminar.
- Kendall J presents When is Nationalization Not Nationalization? posted at simply Capitalism: Why you should be worried that everyone is trying to put lipstick on the "nationalization" pig.
- Doug A. presents Obama Rejects Absolute Truth posted at Dark Waters Blogs.
- Diana Hsieh presents Dissertation Draft One Completed posted at NoodleFood: Woohoo! Come celebrate my progress on my philosophy dissertation!
- Stephen Bourque presents Shock and Awe: Obama’s First Forty Days posted at One Reality: Effort, ingenuity, and talent, which would constitute the fortune of a free man, become his yoke in the welfare state.
- Stella Daily presents A Gross misunderstanding posted at ReasonPharm: A New York Times blog post claims that we need more government control in medicine...completely evading the fact that the problems these controls are supposed to solve were themselves caused by government interference.
- Paul Hsieh presents Hsieh OpEd: "Ayn Rand and the Tea Party Protests" posted at NoodleFood: Will the Tea Party protests the beginning of a new birth of freedom? Or will they fizzle out? I discuss this question in my latest OpEd at PajamasMedia.
- Daniel presents John D Rockefeller Quotes posted at The Nearby Pen:This posts lists a ton of great quotes by John D. Rockefeller, on everything from frugality to education.
- Ari Armstrong presents Political Controls Provoke Producers to Go On Strike posted at FreeColorado.com: Political controls over people's work and wealth provoke many to work and invest less. The idea of a producer's strike spans the last century and is featured in Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged.
- Greg Perkins presents Asking the Right Question posted at NoodleFood:Here's a hilarious comic strip making a philosophical point that Objectivism addresses with a crucial epistemological principle.
- Myrhaf presents Rush Limbaugh and His Critics posted at The New Clarion.
- Gus Van Horn presents Keeping the Secret posted at Gus Van Horn:The local paper teases readers with the question, 'Who is John Galt?' only to send them to two people who haven't the slightest idea.
- Brian Phillips presents If I Were Mayor: Pay Off City Debt posted at Live Oaks:It is a gross injustice to mortgage the lives and property of future Houstonians through debt. Future taxpayers will be forced to pay for today's profligate spending, and that burden will undoubtedly continue to grow as city government increasingly expands its involvement in our lives.
- Paul McKeever presents The Mouse Who Became a Cat: A Fairy Story for Children posted at Paul McKeever:When might I expect these unicellular freeloaders to get a haircut, get a real job, meet and marry a nice spouse, get a mortgage, have kids, and to start paying taxes like the rest of us allegedly “free” “persons”?
- Miranda Barzey presents Elementary Economics and the Bailout posted at Ramen & Rand.
- Jason Stotts presents Shattered Illusions posted at Erosophia:On the illusions that permeate our culture and how we can deal with them.
- Rational Jenn presents Kids & Money posted at Rational Jenn:This post details how we are handling money with our (still young) kids. Sometimes a "handout" is okay!
That is the end of this week's Round Up. Next week's will be hosted by Titanic Deck Chairs.
